Whether you like it or not, it is getting warmer. And we’re not talking about climate change. We’re simply discussing the fact that spring is here and summer is around the corner. This, of course, means it will start to get warmer and more humid, especially in Maryland, where spring and summer humidity are always a hot topic (pun intended). We thought we would share some tips to help you stay cool while things heat up.
Drink Lots of Fluids
Yeah, yeah, you’ve probably heard this one before: stay hydrated. We are not trying to nag you, but it’s important to hydrate, especially when it gets hotter out. Your body loses water through sweat, and you want to replace it as dehydration can be downright dangerous. Try to avoid sugary drinks as they can actually dehydrate you. Water is always your best option.
Keep It Simple and Shady
We are not suggesting you do shady activities to stay cool. We are suggesting that if you are going outside to keep in the shade. For example, spend some time in the shade playing games with the family. Although the shade does not actually make it cooler, being in the sun can make you feel much warmer. According to the SunSentinel, “Shade doesn't actually make temperatures cooler. Rather, being in direct sunlight and solar radiation makes the air feel 10 to 15 degrees warmer than it actually is.” So, being out of the sun and in the shade helps you feel 10 to 15 degrees cooler. Of course, a nice Chesapeake breeze can help you feel cooler too. Additionally, extraneous activity in the heat and humidity can be unsafe and lead to heat stroke. If you must exercise outside, try doing so in the early morning hours or after the sun has gone down and it is cooler.
Call Your Fan Club
Fans can help you stay cool in two ways. The first is by creating a cross breeze. Place fans by windows facing in toward the room. When a breeze comes in, combined with the fan, it will feel quite nice. Another way in which a fan can help is by pushing hot air out. You can do this by placing the fan by the window facing the outside. Your fans will be there to cheer for you while they are on.
Other Ideas to Stay Cool:
- Dampen a sheet or towel and place it on your body
- Stick sheets in the freezer for a few minutes before bed
- Dress in loose-fitting clothes
- Take cold showers
- Turn off the lights
